All Ages. Doors at 8:00pm. RSVP on FB

Like many underground rappers in the Midwest, Tech N9ne specialized in bizarre hardcore rap and stood as one of the few recognized rappers based in Kansas City when he debuted in the late ’90s. He made the major-label jump with Anghellic (2001), which JCOR Entertainment released with the backing of Interscope Records. The album didn’t find a large audience, though, and Tech N9ne returned to the underground and prepared his next album, Absolute Power (2002). A year later Tech N9ne’s new label, Strange Music, re-released Anghellic, which had gone out of print in the wake of JCOR’s fallout with Interscope. Everready (The Religion) followed in 2006, then the collaboration-filled Misery Loves Kompany arrived in 2007. A year later, his Killer album paid strange homage to Michael Jackson's Thriller with its cover art, and then it was back to the collaboration album with the 2009 release Sickology 101. The ambitious concept album K.O.D. was also released that year, while 2010 saw a handful of related sideline releases, including The Lost Scripts of K.O.D. EP and the video K.O.D. Tour: Live in Kansas City. A third collaborative effort, The Gates Mixed Plate, landed in 2010 along with an EP, Seepage, and then the Bad Season mixtape kicked off another productive year, with the glossy crossover effort All 6’s and 7’s and the collabos collection Welcome to Strangeland also arriving in 2011.
In 2012, he released the Klusterfuk EP, along with the compilation E.B.A.H. & Boiling Point: K.O.D. Collection, while 2013 saw him return with Something Else, an album featuring guest shots from System of a Down’s Serj Tankian, Kendrick Lamar, and the remaining members of the Doors. A fifth collection of collaborations, titled Strangeulation, appeared in 2014. Special Effects landed a year later with guests like B.o.B, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, and Eminem.

  9. Paula Poundstone
    Event on 2016-01-16 21:30:00

25 years ago Paula Poundstone climbed on a Greyhound bus and traveled across the country — stopping in at open mic nights at comedy clubs as she went. A high school drop-out, she went on to become one of the great humorists of our time. You can hear her through your laughter as a regular panelist on NPR's popular rascal of a weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait Don't Tell Me. She tours regularly, performing standup comedy across the country, causing Bob Zany with the Boston Globe to write: "Poundstone can regale an audience for several hours with her distinctive brand of wry, intelligent and witty comedy." Audience members may put it a little less elegantly: "I peed my pants."While there is no doubt that Poundstone is funny, the thing that probably separates her from the pack of comics working today and that has made her a legend among comics and audiences alike is her ability to be spontaneous with a crowd. Poundstone says: "No two shows I do are the same. It's not that I don't repeat material. I do. My shows, when they're good, and I like to think they often are, are like a cocktail party. When you first get there, you talk about how badly you got lost and how hard it was to find parking. Then you tell a story about your kids or what you just saw on the news. You meet some new people and ask them about themselves. Then, someone says, "Tell that story you used to tell," and then someone on the other side of the room spills a drink, and you mock them. No one ever applauds me when I leave a party, though. I think they high five."Paula's interchanges with the audience are never mean or done at a person's expense. She even manages to handle politics without provoking the pall of disapproval less artful comics have received. Her newest comedy CD, I HEART JOKES: Paula Tells Them in Boston was recorded during a performance at the Wilbur Theatre in the heart of the city and was released on April Fool's Day 2013.Over the span of her career, Paula has amassed a list of awards and accolades that stretch the length of a great big tall guy's arm. She not only shot through the glass ceiling, she never even acknowledged that it was there. Never one to stereotype herself as a 'female comedian' or limit herself to comedy from a 'female' point of view, in the early 90's she was the first woman to win the cable ACE for Best Standup Comedy Special and the first woman to perform standup at the prestigious White House Correspondents dinner where she joined the current President as part of the evening's entertainment. Paula has starred in comedy specials on HBO and BRAVO, won an Emmy Award, served as "official correspondent" for The Tonight Show during the 1992 Presidential race, pioneered the art of backstage commentary during an Emmy telecast, steps up to the plate for causes she believes in, and is almost always included in any compendium be it film, television or print, noting comedic influences of the 20th/21st century, most recently, We Killed: The Rise of Women in American Comedy (October 2012, Sarah Crichton Books). Paula also appears on "Late Night w/Craig Ferguson" about 3 times a year and she'll do an occasional editorial for NPR's "All Things Considered". In April 2013 NPR Laughter Therapy (Highbridge Audio) was released, a 2-CD collection of NPR's best interviews and stories with "funny folks" including Paula's Talk of the Nation interview. If it means anything to anyone, she is recognized as one of Comedy Central's 100 greatest stand-ups of all time. Paula won an American Comedy Award for Best Female Standup Comic, and in 2010 she was one of a select group voted into the Comedy Hall of Fame. Wait WaitDon't Tell Me is now heard in 5 million homes across the country, including all of the major markets, internationally on NPR Worldwide and on the Internet via podcast. In 2008 it received a Peabody Award for broadcasting excellence. On the show Paula gets to match wits with some of the country's leading pundits. In May 2013 the show will do its first Cinecast from New York's Town Hall and Paula will be one of the Panelists. The show made it's television debut on BBC America with a "2011 Year In Review." Paula was on that panel as well. Poundstone quickly goes on record about how much she loves being part of the show saying: "I am a proud member of the endorphin production industry. They allow me to say whatever I want on Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me. The panelists are unscripted, so it's perfect for me. I feel like I'm a batter in a batting cage. I get lobbed topics. Sometimes I just watch them go by, but every now and then I get a piece of one. If the others didn't cheat, it would be an almost perfect work experience."Paula is also a published author and lecturer. Her hard cover book, There is Nothing In This Book That I Meant To Say (Crown, 2006, with a forward by Mary Tyler Moore) is still in release on audio (Highbridge) and in paperback. Other writing credits include the back page columnist of Mother Jones, The Los Angeles Times, Entertainment Weekly, and Glamour magazine. Not only a writer, but an avid reader, Paula continues her role for the American Library Association (ALA) as the Nat'l spokesperson for United for Libraries, their "Friends of Libraries" national network a citizens support group who work to raise awareness and much needed funds to support their local libraries. Paula has appeared as the headliner at the ALA's annual conference for their Laughs On Us panel the last four years, and to quote Sally Reed, the ALA Nat'l Director: "…you'd have to come to one of these events to see how adored Paula is by librarians. We love her and it's never repetitive." Paula has hosted many events to great success, including the Art Directors Guild Awards an unprecedented 4 times, The Poundstone family lives in Santa Monica, California. Paula has three children, Toshia,

  11. Big Head Todd & The Monsters
    Event on 2016-01-19 20:00:00
    with Mike Doughty
Since their formation in the mid-80s, Big Head Todd & the Monsters have continued to evolve and explore, moving beyond their Colorado club circuit roots to become one of the most adventurous, respected and durable bands in America. Through constant touring and a zeal to travel down new musical avenues in the studio, BHTM (as their dedicated fans call them) have honed their collective stew of influences into a trademark hybrid sound thats immediately recognizable. Now, with Black Beehive, their maiden release on Shout! Factory (February 4, 2014), the quartet has made its most personal and poignant album to date, a collection of new studio tracks that, says co-founder and figurehead Todd Park Mohr, allows us to truly reach our audience through the language of the blues.Recorded at Butcher Boy Studios in Chicago, Mohrs hometown of the past seven years, and produced and mixed by Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist Steve Jordan (whose previous production credits include John Mayer, Buddy Guy, Solomon Burke and Robert Cray), Black Beehive arrives a quarter-century after the groups debut album, Another Mayberry, first put Big Head Todd & the Monsters on the map beyond their home base. Today, the original trioMohr on guitar and vocals, Brian Nevin on drums and vocals and Rob Squires on bass and vocalsalong with keyboardist/pedal steel guitarist Jeremy Lawton, who joined in 2004, are still opening themselves to new possibilities even as they further explore their roots. It has some contemporary elements that bridge a gap between alternative pop and traditional blues, says Mohr about Black Beehive, whose title refers to the late British soul singer Amy Winehouse, the inspiration behind the albums title track. The band approached the recording in an old-school organic fashion, playing together in the studio, which Mohr describes as a big open space, and sticking to the basics. I played resonator guitar on almost every song and most of the album is kind of simple: guitar, slide guitar, drums and bass, he says. We only had two guests on the album. One was Eddie Shaw, who was Howlin Wolfs harmonica player for many years, and Ronnie Baker Brooks, who played guitar. And Steve Jordan played on almost every trackvarious things, percussion, rhythm guitar.Jordan, whose incredible career began when he joined Stevie Wonders band as a teenager, later going on to perform in the Saturday Night Live band, Paul Shaffer's World's Most Dangerous Band on Late Night with David Letterman, and backing John Belushi and Dan Akroyd when they toured as The Blues Brothers, has an unbelievable production roster but is also well-known as a drummer. A member of the John Mayer Trio, Jordan also toured and recorded with Keith Richards and the X-pensive Winos, joined Eric Clapton for his 2006 European tour, and has also worked with Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, B.B. King, James Brown and more. Mohr first met Jordan through the legendary guitarist Hubert Sumlin, who died in 2011. We were planning to have an 80th birthday party for Hubert, says Todd, and Steve was the musical director. When Hubert passed away it ended up being a tribute at the Apollo Theater: Eric Clapton and Billy Gibbons and Keith Richardsthere were probably 35 incredible musicians at this thing. I was immediately awestruck by Steves command of the material and his understanding of it and his ability to get it done on short notice with all these people. I thought this guy would be an unbelievable producer for me to work with. I sent him some demos and he was up for it.As he began writing material for the album, Mohr drew from both his own life experiences and events in the news. The title track was written following Winehouses death. I love her voice and her performances, and obviously her shenanigans were part of her persona, says Mohr. Several other songs were also ripped from the headlines, including We Wont Go Back, which Mohr penned about the 2010 Arab Spring uprisings in the Middle East, and Fear, Greed and Ignorance, whose topical lyrics declare that its those three dishonorable traits that are driving you America off the edge of the road. Not every track is quite so pointed, however. Huberts Dream, is a nod to the late Mr. Sumlin, while album opener Hey Delila is Mohrs tribute to another blues giant, Memphis Minnie. I happened to acquire a great example of her instrument, which was a 1941 Spanish National resonator guitar. Plus, she has an incredible life story, he says. Everything About You is dedicated to NASA, who called upon BHTM to awaken the Discovery space shuttle crew with their song Blue Sky in 2011, marking the first time live music was ever used for that purpose.Among the albums other tunes, Josephina and Seven State Lines are what Mohr describes simply as blues-based themes, while I Get Smooth is a comedy piece. The cautionary tale Travelin Light is the story of lovers who threw away our hearts and fled and the moving Forever Bonnie is based on a true story of a gentleman who got a love letter delivered to him 53 years later by the Postal Service. Black Beehive also includes, as a bonus track, Big Head Todd & the Monsters burning take on the Jimmy Reed blues classic Baby What You Want Me To Do, a song that Jordan requested they cut.For BHTM, Black Beehive serves as both a reaffirmation of the bands roots and a step into the next 25 years. Founded as a trio in Boulder, Colorado in 1986, Big Head Todd & the Monsters quickly built a strong reputation on the local club circuit. As word of their soulful and intense live show traveled around the nation they found themselves filling larger and larger venues. BHTM have now played Denvers historic Red Rocks Amphitheatre more than 20 times, and are embedded in the fabric of Colorados music scene.Beginning with Another Mayberry in 1989, critics noticed what audiences at BHTM live shows already knew. The All Music Guide praised the subtlety of Mohrs lyrics and his individual world view. But it was the follow-up, 1990s Midnight Radio, that truly established the band as a creative force to be reckoned with. Its popularity led to a major label contract and the release of the platinum-selling Sister Sweetly in 1993. With subsequent albums such as 1994s Strategem and 1997s Beautiful World, the band earned a place among the top names on the jam band circuit, solidified by 1998s Live Monsters, the first official concert recording by Big Head Todd & the Monsters. Riviera was released in 2002, followed by 2004s Crimes of Passion, of which The London Times stated "American rock doesn't get anymore classy than this." Later that year, Live at the Fillmore was released to critical praise. All Music Guide called the release, the bands first with Jeremy Lawton, loud, proud, and full of righteous raw ambience. The band, which has always proudly controlled its own business dealings and marketing, gave away 2007s All the Love You Need through their email list, radio stations, and magazines. Their ninth studio album, Rocksteady, followed in 2010. Said Examiner.com, With Rocksteady, the Colorado boys prove they can sprinkle in a plethora of differing music styles and still rock. 2011s 100 Years of Robert Johnson, the album preceding Black Beehive, found the group paying tribute to the pioneering bluesman while performing as Big Head Blues Club (along with other notable blues legends, including B. B. King, Charlie Musselwhite, Cedric Burnside, David Honeyboy Edwards, Sumlin, Ruthie Foster, and Lightnin Malcolm). The band toured behind the album with a few of the guest artists, marking some of the final performances by both Edwards and Sumlin. Mohr paid tribute to Sumlin in 2012 when he served as a featured artist at his tribute show at the Apollo Theatre. With all of that history behind them, it would be easy for Big Head Todd & the Monsters to play the nostalgia card and fall back on past glories, but thats of no interest to them. BHTM still performs, and devoutly loves, the material that first brought them to their fans material they now approach with a fresh, seasoned perspective. As a writer and as a human being theres a big difference between being 21 and 47, says Mohr. Having said that, I think a lot of those compositions are still lyrically sound, even though its hard for me to imagine that I would have had the experience to write about the stuff I did. Obviously, I think the band has gotten better over the years because when you develop yourself you continue to improve, and I think we have improved musically. As a writer, Im really pleased with where Im at right now.A lot of it had to do with my experience with the Robert Johnson project, he adds. That had a large impact on how I looked at music. For a large portion of my career, Ive been trying to reproduce the success of Sister Sweetly, just as a touchstone of this is a pop song, or rock-pop. Pop songs have pretty narrow rules when it comes down to it. Generally you need a chorus and a bridge. The blues material from Robert Johnsons day, the prewar blues, was so fascinating to me because of the fact that it is pop music but there are no choruses. Its a different way of having repetition and themes and a different goal for a pop song. The music is shared by everybody because its passed down through tradition. The whole spirit of what one is going for is radically different than pop and that really became exciting for me because I could see a new way to reach people. When Big Head Todd & the Monsters launch their extensive national tour behind Black Beehive in Januarywhich will continue through the summer and hit most major marketsthey will be honing the albums ageless blues along the way, and simultaneously affirming their own longevity. Its clear that they possess a rare musical wholeness that has not only survived for 25 plus years, but still has them looking forward to creating music together night after night. The other guys have shown great support of my songwriting and what Im able to do, and all of the band members bring a lot to the plate, both musically and as a unit, says Mohr. No one ever expects a band to last this long. Were very, very lucky.

The Aladdin Theater in Portland, OR welcomes comedian Paula Poundstone on Saturday, January 16th. Thirty two years ago Paula Poundstone climbed on a Greyhound bus and traveled across the country — stopping in at open mic nights at comedy clubs as she went. She went on to become one of our country’s foremost humorists. You can hear her through your laughter as a regular panelist on NPR’s popular rascal of a weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me. Watch for Paula as she lends her distinctive voice to the character “Forgetter Paula” in the new Disney Pixar film “Inside Out” about a young girl Riley who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job. The movie chronicles and the emotional roller coaster that change can bring. Riley’s emotions include; Joy (Amy Poehler,) Fear (Bill Hader,) Anger (Lewis Black,) Disgust (Mindy Kaling,) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith.) “Inside Out” opens nationwide June 19, 2015. Sometimes I just watch them go by, but every now and then I get a piece of one. If the others didn't cheat, it would be an almost perfect work experience.”

Paula is also a published author and lecturer.

Not only a writer, but an avid reader, Paula continues her role for the American Library Associa-tion (ALA) as the Nat'l spokesperson for United for Libraries, their "Friends of Libraries" nation-al network – a citizens support group who work to raise awareness and much needed funds to support their local libraries. Paula has appeared as the headliner at the ALA's annual conference for their Laughs On Us panel the last four years, and to quote Sally Reed, the ALA Nat'l Direc-tor: "…you'd have to come to one of these events to see how adored Paula is by librarians. We love her and it's never repetitive." Paula has hosted many events to great success, including the Art Directors Guild Awards an unprecedented 4 times.
